The Detroit Tigers’ signing of right-handed starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is an indication that the team is serious about contending next season. This signing is a step in the right direction without breaking the bank to do it. He is considered one of top starters on the free agent market and was within the price range for the Tigers.

East Lansing — This was the position Michigan State expected to be in all season and dating back to last winter during off-season training, through spring practice and then preseason camp in August.

It was out there for the Spartans to take it and they did in fine fashion. They completed the first of their goals set for this season in winning the Big Ten East division to advance to the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis next Saturday where they will meet the unbeaten Iowa Hawkeyes.

The second goal was to win the Big Ten Championship to reach the third goal of advancing to claim one of the four slots in the College Football Playoffs to play for the National Championship.

The Spartans continued the momentum from the victory last Saturday over Ohio State by completely dominating Penn State, 55-16 at Spartan Staduim on Senior Day. It was a fitting farewell to 24 seniors who played their final game in East Lansing.

Denzel Valentine is putting everyone on notice that he and the Spartans plan to have special season this year. The senior put on another show in the Wooden Legacy Classic as the Spartans down Boise State in the semi-final game. The Spartans will play in the tournament final game against the winner of the Arizona-Providence game on Sunday.

Not only is Valentine making a bid for an All-American type of year, he is leading a talented supporting cast of teammates who are getting better as well. This looks like the deepest team that Coach Izzo has had in his 21 years at MSU. It’s definitely a team he can do a lot of things with.

Detroit Lions in playoffs? Don’t laugh it off quite yet

Given the state of the NFC and the rest of the Lions’ schedule, there’s still a small ray of hope for this season.

A few weeks ago, the notion that you mention playoffs in the same breath as the Lions was a joke. However, recently the NFC has become sort of mediocre with only two teams, the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals close to clinching division titles. The Lions’ remaining schedule has only one team with a winning record, that being the Green Bay Packers. If the Lions run the table, and that’s a big “if”, they could finish 9-7. That’s a big shift considering they started the season 1-7!

Triple doubles from Denzel Valentine might be something that Spartans fans may see a lot of this year. He is truly leading this team in the same manner that former Spartan Draymond Green did his senior year. The victory over Boston College gave coach Izzo his 500th win as the Spartan head coach; an impressive milestone to say the least.
