The Spartans win big in the opening game of the 2015-16 season missing one of their key contributors from last years’ team, Gavin Schilling. However, senior Matt Costello and freshman Deyonta Davis were more than enough up front to handle the visitors from Florida. MSU was very good defensively and showed plenty of firepower offensively. One holdover problem from last year was the free throw shooting. The Spartans went 17 for 28 (61%) from the foul line. That is inexcusable for the entire team. That statistic will definitely have to improve as the season goes along.

Recruiting losses

Looks like some of the momentum in football recruiting is slowing down as another recruit has decommited. Hunter Rison, son of former Spartan great  Andre Rison, had decommited from the class of 2017. He indicated that he committed way too early in the process. This along with the three players who decommited earlier this week, doesn’t make it a good week for Sparty. Is it the sign of things to come or what? I guess we will see how it all plays out.

#Denzel Valentine is the perceived star of this years’ #MSU basketball and rightfully so. He’s a multi-talented player who can shoot the three, rebound and play the point with excellence. This adds up to a potential triple double on any given night. Thats not to say he’s another #Magic Johnson, but his skills are pretty impressive. In addition, he has been elected as one of the captains on the team, therefore proving he is very much respected by his teammates and the coaches. He will be relied upon to lead the Spartans to whatever success they have this year.

He will have help in his former high school teammate, Bryn Forbes, who Coach Izzo said is the most improved player from last years’ team. Forbes is a prolific three point shooter and has bulked up some and improved defensively. Together with Valentine, they will pose an impressive tandem for opposing teams to deal with.
