MSU 94, NMU 53: Denzel Valentine, new Spartans impress in exhibition

EAST LANSING – That first public exhibition is more about the first look at the new guys than anything — even when a senior star shines, as Denzel Valentine did Tuesday with a triple-double — and Michigan State’s made early impressions.Eron Harris with a fall-away jumper. Deyonta Davis with blocked shot, pinned against the backboard. Matt McQuaid with a slick pass for a Davis basket. All three of these players, designated as they are for key roles this season, gave a glimpse at why in the first few minutes of a 94-53 exhibition game victory over Northern Michigan at Breslin Center. And they joined their teammates at times in demonstrating why Tom Izzo has said he needs more than two exhibition games to get prepared for a season.

Looks like the Spartans are off and running as they start the 2015-16 season with an exhibition game against Northern Michigan. Coach Izzo may have all the pieces he needs to make a serious run at a national title. He’s got solid players returning from last years’ squad that made it to the Final Four in Valentine, Forbes, Costello, etc… In addition, he has some promising freshman in Davis and McQuaid as well transfer Harris to contribute. We will have to see how this team progresses as the season moves along.
